In brief
MV Del Norte is a passenger-only fast ferry operated by Golden Gate Ferries.
The vessel is named after Del Norte County, one of the member counties of the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District. The Del Norte was designed by Advanced Multi-Hull and built by Dakota Creek in Port Anacortes, WA. It was the first catamaran placed into service by Golden Gate Ferry on September 8, 1998. This significant milestone offered customers new commute options, including more frequent trips, better departure times, and faster crossings. The addition of the Del Norte to the Larkspur Ferry fleet nearly doubled the number of daily round trips available to customers - to 40 trips per day up from 26. The high-speed catamaran was an instant hit, increasing ridership by 11%.
The Del Norte was scheduled to undergo an engine replacement in June 2009. During that time, it was replaced by the MV Napa.

In context
Every figure in this section is a count, a rank or a percentile over vessels actually held in this registry — not over the world fleet, which is larger. Nothing here is estimated.
At 542 gross tons, MV Del Norte is the 72,641st largest of the 84,014 vessels in this registry that report a tonnage. The median across that set is 5,994 GT, so this hull is about 11 times smaller than the typical vessel on record here. The largest measures 499,167 GT.
Among the 58,086 vessels this registry holds no type classification for held here, it ranks 40,679th by tonnage — larger than 18% of that group. Their median tonnage is 5,358 GT, and the largest tenth begin at 54,309 GT. The flag most often flown by this group is Panama (5,698 ships). The yard that appears most often against it is HD Hyundai Mipo, with 615 hulls on record.
United States is the country of registry for 2,278 vessels in this directory, of which MV Del Norte is the 1,165th largest by tonnage. The most common class under that flag is vessels this registry holds no type classification for (977 ships), and the median vessel measures 1,706 GT. Browse every ship flagged United States.
Narrowing to both dimensions at once, this registry holds 977 vessels this registry holds no type classification for flying the United States flag, of which 386 are larger by tonnage.
MV Del Norte was built in 1997, making it 29 years old. It is one of 1,319 hulls in this registry delivered that year, a cohort whose median tonnage is 8,388 GT; within it this ship is the 1,131st largest. Across the whole of the 1990s the registry holds 12,006 vessels, median 4,956 GT. The median build year across the entire registry is 1995.
At 41.3 m overall, MV Del Norte is 73.8 m shorter than the 115.0 m median for vessels this registry holds no type classification for on record, with a beam of 39.0 m and a draft of 5.0 m.
IMO numbers are issued in broadly chronological blocks. Within 500 either side of 8967838 this registry holds 24 other vessels, whose median build year is 2001 and which range from 1958 to 2002. That places this hull’s registration in the same part of the series, consistent with its recorded build year of 1997.
Its IMO number, 8967838, carries its own check digit. The first six digits are weighted seven down to two and summed — 8×7 + 9×6 + 6×5 + 7×4 + 8×3 + 3×2 = 198 — and the last digit of that total, 8, must equal the seventh digit, 8. It does, so this number is well formed.
