In brief
Emma Mærsk is the first container ship in the E class of eight owned by A.P. Møller – Mærsk A/S. When launched in 2006, she was the largest container ship ever built, and in 2010, she and her seven sister ships were among the longest container ships. Officially, she is able to carry around 11,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) or 14,770 TEU, depending on definition. In May 2010, her sister ship Ebba Mærsk set a record of 15,011 TEU in Tanger-Med, Tangier.

In context
Every figure in this section is a count, a rank or a percentile over vessels actually held in this registry — not over the world fleet, which is larger. Nothing here is estimated.
At 170,793 gross tons, Emma Mærsk is the 340th largest of the 84,014 vessels in this registry that report a tonnage. The median across that set is 5,994 GT, so this hull is about 28 times the typical vessel on record here. The largest measures 499,167 GT.
Among the 3,881 container ships held here, it ranks 165th by tonnage — larger than 96% of that group. Their median tonnage is 33,698 GT, and the largest tenth begin at 140,096 GT. The flag most often flown by this group is Liberia (498 ships). The yard that appears most often against it is HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, with 348 hulls on record.
Denmark is the country of registry for 849 vessels in this directory, of which Emma Mærsk is the 32nd largest by tonnage. The most common class under that flag is vessels this registry holds no type classification for (495 ships), and the median vessel measures 4,678 GT. Browse every ship flagged Denmark.
Narrowing to both dimensions at once, this registry holds 101 container ships flying the Denmark flag, of which 27 are larger by tonnage.
Emma Mærsk was built in 2006, making it 20 years old. It is one of 2,118 hulls in this registry delivered that year, a cohort whose median tonnage is 8,539 GT; within it this ship is the 2nd largest. Across the whole of the 2000s the registry holds 18,605 vessels, median 9,957 GT. The median build year across the entire registry is 1995.
The registry attributes 190 vessels to Odense Steel Shipyard, with a median tonnage of 52,186 GT, delivered between 1924 and 2012. See the rest of that yard’s output.
At 397.0 m overall, Emma Mærsk is 175.4 m longer than the 221.6 m median for container ships on record, with a beam of 56.4 m and a draft of 15.5 m.
IMO numbers are issued in broadly chronological blocks. Within 500 either side of 9321483 this registry holds 76 other vessels, whose median build year is 2006 and which range from 2004 to 2008. That places this hull’s registration in the same part of the series, consistent with its recorded build year of 2006.
Its IMO number, 9321483, carries its own check digit. The first six digits are weighted seven down to two and summed — 9×7 + 3×6 + 2×5 + 1×4 + 4×3 + 8×2 = 123 — and the last digit of that total, 3, must equal the seventh digit, 3. It does, so this number is well formed.
